Mural Illustration in Leeds: The Neville Street Gallery

We were excited to be commissioned to create artwork for Neville Street in Leeds. This honours the history, life and culture of the city.

The artwork is accompanied by nine stunning illustrations by other local artists. They delve into past, present, and future culture, industrial heritage, music, nature, and the people of Leeds, with a particular focus on communities in the southern part of the city.

In creating the artwork, we collaborated with local communities and organisations such as Holbeck Together, Leeds Libraries and Slung Low. They helped our research and provided an authentic influence. After all, the goal was to celebrate the cultural and historical ties between south Leeds communities and the city centre.

Above: watch us describing the process behind creating our artwork.

“These unique artworks on Neville Street will provide a positive and thought-provoking entrance to Leeds, further underpinning our identity as a culturally vibrant and creative city.

“The artists have done an incredible job of representing so many aspects of our heritage, history, and the wide range of cultures in Leeds within their artwork and I think people will enjoy these works for many years to come.”

— Councillor Helen Hayden

“Over the next few years, Leeds station will see major transformation, and this unique display of artwork is part of that.

It has been brilliant to work with the artists and local partners to turn this idea into a reality – an idea that will hopefully deliver enjoyment and a lasting legacy for everyone who passes through Neville Street as part of the new Leeds station.”

— Anna Weeks, Principal Programme Sponsor at Network Rail

The gallery of artwork, connecting the heritage of south Leeds to the city centre, is designed to enhance a broader set of environmental improvements on Neville Street and its surroundings. These improvements are part of the initial phase of the Leeds Integrated Station Masterplan and involve enhancing pedestrian, cycling, and wheeling infrastructure between the north and south of Leeds. The exhibition was commissioned through a collaboration involving Leeds City Council, the Leeds Civic Trust, Network Rail, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, and local councillors. It is a component of the enhancements carried out by the Leeds Station Sustainable Travel Gateway scheme and is being unveiled as part of LEEDS2023 (year of culture).

A big thank you to Leeds City Council for commissioning us for this project. It was a pleasure to be involved.
